Around this time last year, my aunt (US root) passed away. When the family gathered together, there were so many questions. Research girl that I am, I found a link to a man in Australia who has put EVERY person in order of that surname, including DNA studies. That's a story in itself. The work was done and it established how that line is from Cornwall, making them Cornish thru and thru. The Cornish had their own definitive culture, refused to be governed by the queen. One day I'll spend more time with it.
The Ukrainian side most likely had been in the same region for generations. No need for me to know names, but the study of the history is very interesting. Land of the Cossacks. One day I'll spend more time with that, as well.
That leaves the US grandparent and a walk thru American history. My grandmother's paternal line is the dead end. Her maternal line surname is the one that's just unfolded. As with your line, they got here about the same time. Mid 1600s. I didn't expect that at all. From the historical point of view, this is going to be a lot of fun. They first settled in Maryland, then migrated to Delaware, then Virginia, then Ohio-pre Civil War....which means they had to go thru the Cumberland Gap. Scots-Irish, but predominately Scotsman hailing from Ulster. More history to look at when the cabin fever of winter hits.
The more troubling part is the notable lack of family association, seeming to begin with the later years of the son of the Civil War soldier. No evidence of an established family table since, continuing to present day. You can see the effects of further westward expansion and industrialization, the shift from the extended family to the nuclear....and the nuclear family itself fighting to survive. The breakdown of relationship is clear.
If I missed my calling it would be on the side of Historian/Sociologist. My curiosity is fueled by searching for the effects of the Civil War that have devastated family lines and spawned generations of bitterness from death and divorce.
