      Default Civil War Soldier Registry

      I found this link:
      http://www.itd.nps.gov/cwss/index.html

I've been working on the family tree. I only have one grandparent with long American roots. It's been quite the adventure to take this walk thru American history. I do have one of the 'greats' who did fight in the Civil War.

This particular line arrived somewhere in the 1600s.

Thanx for the link! I'm trying to find if any of my relatives fought in the Civil War.

Mine turned out to be my great great great grandfather. I now have the regiment and all of the battles fought. It appears that he was in two regiments, the 76th and the 77th Ohio Infantry.

You can do a name search for POWs. There was only one with the same surname. I don't think he is any relation.

You begin to see interesting things when tracing your lineage. Not so much who they were in terms of fame/fortune or lack thereof, but a feel for how the families functioned thru the generations. It's been quite interesting.

And always the element of mystery. I pretty well figured out why my grampa and dad never wanted us kids to believe any of the other families with our name were related to us....and we are indeed all related. When I looked into a few things with my grampa's childhood and being "orphaned" as the youngest when both parents died within a few years at age 11....it started to come together. I wont even know for sure but apparently I hit the nail on the head when I told my aunt (his daughter) about my ideas. She never replied to my email in reference to it. That alone told me more than I needed to know.

      Mystery, to be sure.

What I've found interesting is the family migration. When I get some of the details processed, I'd like to do a little research as to what was happening historically during each move. There was a good flow to the family until the Civil War, then came the shift. I've only looked at direct blood line. I may look at some of the siblings to see if they maintained the stability or if that's where things began to unravel for everyone.

The other part of the bloodline that's been here....there should be records, but I'm not having much success. I don't have a good feel about it. Orphan spirit.

Consider the hardship, disease, the fear of not making it through the winter for those that were pioneering as they moved westward or out of population centers, not to mention the dangers of hostilities with native peoples and criminals.

One thing I saw was the rise of the individual versus the extended family that promoted a family hearth. Also, the first obvious abandonment from someone who had generation upon generation of solid family. I haven't looked at the siblings to see if he was atypical or the result of the shift from an agricultural society to industrialization.

The other line that doesn't appear to have fared well, my great grandfather's, shows little to no accessible family record. Perhaps not a healthy line. He died at 31, from either tuberculosis or pneumonia. 1878-1901. Probably born in WVa and at 23, took his bride (my great grandmother) to Chicago. Without seeing the history of his family, I don't have enough to go on to be able to see any kind of pattern.

I do have two clans to work with, which will prove interesting.

I've taken to studying the family of my last name/dad's side. Anything beyond that is too much time for me

What started the whole thing was being told my grampa was an orphan with no real history beyond him and then finding out from my aunt that there was more than we were told. Of course that only fueled my curiosity. Our family name goes back to 1660 here on US soil...and perhaps further.

With one grandparent from England and two from Ukraine, that left one here. That one became two, with the US soil grandparent having both paternal and maternal lines here.

Around this time last year, my aunt (US root) passed away. When the family gathered together, there were so many questions. Research girl that I am, I found a link to a man in Australia who has put EVERY person in order of that surname, including DNA studies. That's a story in itself. The work was done and it established how that line is from Cornwall, making them Cornish thru and thru. The Cornish had their own definitive culture, refused to be governed by the queen. One day I'll spend more time with it.

The Ukrainian side most likely had been in the same region for generations. No need for me to know names, but the study of the history is very interesting. Land of the Cossacks. One day I'll spend more time with that, as well.

That leaves the US grandparent and a walk thru American history. My grandmother's paternal line is the dead end. Her maternal line surname is the one that's just unfolded. As with your line, they got here about the same time. Mid 1600s. I didn't expect that at all. From the historical point of view, this is going to be a lot of fun. They first settled in Maryland, then migrated to Delaware, then Virginia, then Ohio-pre Civil War....which means they had to go thru the Cumberland Gap. Scots-Irish, but predominately Scotsman hailing from Ulster. More history to look at when the cabin fever of winter hits.

The more troubling part is the notable lack of family association, seeming to begin with the later years of the son of the Civil War soldier. No evidence of an established family table since, continuing to present day. You can see the effects of further westward expansion and industrialization, the shift from the extended family to the nuclear....and the nuclear family itself fighting to survive. The breakdown of relationship is clear.

If I missed my calling it would be on the side of Historian/Sociologist. My curiosity is fueled by searching for the effects of the Civil War that have devastated family lines and spawned generations of bitterness from death and divorce.
