Baking an Apple Pie

I am not much of a baker, but I got this brilliant (maybe?) idea to try and bake an apple pie this Thanksgiving. I have a few questions:

1. Should I try to make my own dough or buy store bought?
2. What are the best kind of apples to use? I love eating Granny Smith's sour apples but not so sure how that would fare in an apple pie
3. Anyone have a good recipe? So far I am looking at one of these cause they don't sound too hard:

Apple pies are so easy to make and so much better than the store bought kind. I haven't made homemade dough in ages, I usually buy either a frozen 2pack of unbaked pie crusts or the Pillsbury refrigerated dough thats rolled up in a box.

Personally I like to use 2 or 3 different kinds of apples in my pie. Last week I made one using 2 small MacIntosh apples (my favorite), 2 small Galas and one huge Red Delicious. Of course the quantity of apples used will depend on the size of the pie you'll be making, mine was just a small 8".

I don't usually buy Granny Smiths but according to this you can use them if you add just a little extra sugar:

This filling recipe is very similar to the recipe I use except I never use the margarine/butter...so, my recipe would be:

Filling
1/2 cup sugar
1/4 cup Gold Medal® all-purpose flour
3/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
Dash salt
6 cups thinly sliced peeled tart apples (6 medium)


If you're buying the crusts and not making them from scratch just start at step #4. I also do not do that topping but you may like it if you like a crunchy top:

I am like Krystian, haven't made homemade pie crust. I prefer the Pilsbury crust in a box because if you're using a pyrex pan they fit very well.

As far as the apples go #1 rule: DO NOT USE CANNED APPLE PIE FILLING But, if you have a farmers market near you, try and get some apples from them, ask them which ones they are using for baking.

I don't even make dessert anymore for years. And for the Christmas party they want me to make something. oh yes I did, a few years ago ....I made a pineapple pie tho because the bakeries won't make them anymore and I crave them sometimes
